Invisible Dog Fence Installation –How to install an underground dog fence
The first step to getting started is to determine witch pet containment system will work best for you and your pet. (See underground dog fence reviews) A basic system will work for most dogs I would recommend one of the Petsafe® Deluxe containment systems or the Innotek® Ultrasmart for the more stubborn dog I would recommend the Petsafe® Deluxe Stubborn Dog system. If you have a very small dog ten pounds or less the Petsafe® Deluxe Little dog system will work best for you.
After deciding witch invisible dog fence is right for you the next step is the layout of the pet containment system boundary wire. (See underground dog fence layouts)This is very important don’t waist the afternoon installing the underground boundary wire too find out the layout will not work for you.
Once you know the containment boundaries you need to find a good place to install the underground dog fence transmitter. The ideal place to mount the transmitter will be indoors (someplace dry) that is as close to the outside containment boundary wire, this will lead to less wire to bury. If there is not a good place near the boundary wire its ok just a little more wire to bury. (See mounting the transmitter)
Now that we know the underground dog fence layout and transmitter location its time to get started. Did you call Julie to mark the underground utilities? It is always a good idea to call Julie or make an online request, even if all the utilities are above head from the utility pole you never know what’s underground. Julie is Free use it!
After Julie marks the underground utilities or gives the OK to start its time to bury the wire. There are a couple of ways to do this; I would recommend renting something to install the containment wire. (See underground dog fence installation tools) After the wire is installed mount the transmitter and run the twist to the pet containment boundary wire and splice the twist and the boundary wire together as follows, one side of boundary wire to one side of twist and repeat with the remaining boundary wire and twist. It dose not matter witch end goes to witch end as long as its twist to boundary wire.
Finally if there is a driveway to cross there are two options, if there is a culvert use it as long as its not more than two or three feet deep. When crossing the boundary wire thru a culvert use either a garden hose or PVC to protect the wire from damage. If there is no culvert you will need to score (cut) the driveway. Don’t worry it’s not as bad as it sounds if you do a neat job you will not notice that’s its there. To score a driveway snap a chalk line and cut about ¼ inch deep with a skill saw that has a concrete blade.(see underground dog fence installation tools) After the driveway has been cut lay the containment wire in the slot and use wet-dry emergency roofing caulk to seal over the top.
Once the invisible dog fence is buried and the transmitter is installed put the flags up and train your dog. (See underground dog fence flagging and training)
